One of planet Megara’s unique characteristics is the language spoken there. There are six dialects in the planet, one for each sector, but the official language of the planet is Meg. Meg is a very complicated language, taught at a young age to the inhabitants. Meg is very peculiar, since the language is a fusion of sign language (non-verbal communication), hieroglyphic symbols (written communication), and a verbal language mostly consisting of consonant sounds.

 

Furthermore, since Meg is spoken exclusively on Megara, the delegations of the Hexagon are required to learn the dialects of the other planets of the Alpha Quadrant in order to achieve efficient communication with the other governments.

 

In order to achieve perfect communication, one must use verbal dialect (which is different in every sector) and at the same time communicate with sign language. This form of communication is hard to master but is a requirement for the inhabitants of the planet. As for written communication, the Megarians use a system similar to the Egyptian hieroglyphics. These symbols do not represent word nor consonants/vowels. Instead, these symbols represent actions. Just imagine having to learn thousands of hieroglyphics in order to write! Nevertheless, this Megarian system of writing is quite artistic and pleasing to see, which is why the Megarians write messages all over the planet’s roads and caves. In addition, Megarians love getting tattoos with special messages written in this form, and it has become a tradition to get a tattoo in the ink of the color representing your sector. As previously stated, this tattoo has a special meaning to the planet’s inhabitants. If a Megarian meets another inhabitant and their tattoos light up in a bright gold color, he or she has found their one true love.
